Scenic Rim Lakes & Water Sports

Water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, sailing and fishing are all popular near Boonah. The lakes and dams of the Scenic Rim are beautiful and unique places, providing opportunity for all year round relaxation and activity. 

Choose from a variety of accommodation nearby including cabins, houses, caravan park, B&Bs or camping grounds suitable for school, church and adventure activities.

Lake Maroon

Lake Maroon is 25 kilometres south of Boonah in the foothills of the McPherson Range. All water sports including fishing, canoeing, sailing and kayaking are popular activities. There is a single concrete boat ramp and no restrictions on boat numbers. 


Maroon is also one of South East Queensland's best freshwater fly and surface fishing destinations, and the dam is stocked with silver perch, golden perch, Mary River cod and red claw cray.

Best times for fishing are early morning and late afternoon. A Stocked Impoundment Permit is required See for more information.

Picnic grounds with tables and chairs and barbecues are available with stunning views to the lake and mountains. A great day out at any time of the year.


With current good water levels in the dam, there is prolific birdlife including black swans, pelican, and king parrots.


Nearby private accommodation on the southern side of Boonah is available but Lake Maroon is also only 25 kilometres from Boonah.

Lake Moogerah

Moogerah is a local Aboriginal word meaning "place of thunder storms". It
is an exceptional recreation ground with water skiing, jet skiing, bird watching, fishing, picnic and barbecue facilities, bushwalking and kayaking all available.

A café also operates at Lake Moogerah.

Bird Watching

The permanent water supply provides habitat for prolific birdlife all year round. Over 38 different species have been recorded in a single day. More.


Grab a tinnie and try your luck fishing. Lake Moogerah has been stocked with Australian Bass, Golden Perch, Silver Perch & Mary River Cod. You should be able to catch enough for dinner. Note: A Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required to fish at Lake Moogerah.


There are no boating restrictions on Lake Moogerah although there is a no boating and no fishing zone around the dam wall. Two concrete launching ramps are provided on the carvan park side of the dam. Kayaking, jet skiing, waterskiing and even sailing are popular activities at Lake Moogerah.


With stunning views to the lake and mountains, the recreation facilitiesat Lake Moogerah are open to the public from 6.00am to 6.00pm, seven days a week. Picnic tables and chairs and gas barbecues are available. You'll have a great day out any time of the year.

Star Gazing

Lake Moogerah is a favourite place with astronomy clubs and enthusiasts. Star gazing just over an hour from Brisbane! The clear nights and minimal light pollution mean the seeing is fantastic.

Wyaralong Dam

The Mt Joyce Escape Recreation Park at Wyaralong Dam is an outstanding recreational facility just 15 -20 minutes from the northern side of Boonah.

It offers world class mountain bike trails, shoreline horse trails, bush walks and trail runs.

Mountain Biking

A world class mountain bike track network provides trails for cross country, all mountain, downhill and four cross riders. There is a range of trails are available, targeting the different skill sets of beginners through to very experienced mountain bike riders. For more information click here.


Suitable for day use or overnight use the park has a playground, camping and other amenities. This is an all year round mecca for outdoor enthusiasts while also perfect for a picnic with the children.


The park has no power boats which makes it a perfect place to paddle your kayak and a wonderful place for the amateur or professional photographer.


Choose accommodation on the northern and eastern sides or in Boonah for easy access to Wyaralong.
